Notes for Frances Gertrude McClelland
Frances met Charles when she was working in a beauty shop in Waynesburg, Pa. and a friend (who worked in the shop) brought her to Mapletown one weekend. She and the friend were walking down the road in Mapletown and Charles drove by and picked them up. I guess the girl was going with a friend of Charles. Later someone said she was cute and Charles said "I don't think she is so hot. "That would be a typical Charles Barbe saying!!!

Frances was a tiny little lady who worked very hard at raising her children. I think she had 99% of that responsibility. Charles worked and provided the income, but was not there emotionally for his kids. He just didn’t know how to be, having lost his mother at age three.
I always thought Frances did not give her kids enough guidance as far as what they should or should not do. This was so different from my mother who probably gave too much guidance!
Frances always raised a huge garden, canned and froze alot of food, sewed, cooked her brains out, did house repairs and redecorating. She was a worker!! She was pleasant to be around. She lliked to play games and cards and badminton in the summer.

Notes for Charles Alexander (Spouse 1)
Charles’ mother died when he was about three and he was raised by his paternal grandmother (Louisa Mestrazat) and aunts. His father remarried and lived right next door. Apparently he was spoiled. The Mestrezats had money which they lost in the 1929 crash. Anyway, they had a store in Mapletown and Charles told me he could go in and take anything he wanted. He never grew up. He died an 88 year old spoiled brat. But that's what the loss of a mother can do and the resulting over compensation by the rest of the family. Miller said that when his dad remarried his new wife said let's bring Charles here, but the Dad said no, let him stay where he is; the aunts and grandmother want to keep him.
I don’t mean to imply that he was not a good or nice man. He was. He was just cantankerous and seemed to not know how to get close to his children. Again, I attribute this to lack of a mother. The two half brothers, who had their mother were much more grounded and are very close to their children and grandchildren.

Tidbit: Half brother Miller told us that when Charles and Frances were first married they lived in what became Miller’s house in Mapletown and had a fight where they were throwing dishes and had to go next door to Charles Seniors house (which later became Ewing’s house) to get more dishes.
