Joe Benton said that Merv got his name from a flour sack. When Frances was pregnant they had a flour sack that had Mervin Lee printed on it and that is how they chose his name.

Carolyn K. N. Barbe

Carolyn Kay Needham Barbe, 69, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, in Martinsburg City Hospital.

She was born Feb. 21, 1940, at her family home in Newark Valley, N.Y. Born the youngest daughter of the late William and Bernice Goodrich Needham.

Mrs. Barbe was a cheerleader at Newark Valley High, where she graduated in 1958.

She was a 4H leader in Greensboro, Pa., where she shared her love of horses and animals with others.

Her hobbies included refinishing antiques and gardening.

Most of all she was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

She will be sadly missed by all of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Mervin L. Barbe, whom she married on Oct. 9, 1959; also surviving are her three children, Craig Barbe, Amy Thistlethwaite both of Martinsburg, and Vanessa Routzahn and husband Wesley of Smithsburg, Md.; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Hawk and Audrey Routzahn; one great-grandchild, Karlee Hawk; four siblings, Lillian Gregrow, Dorothy Torrey, and husband Ralph, Phyllis Harris, and William Needham all of Newark Valley, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and close family friend Ann Hernandez.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Needham; and two nephews, John Homa and Scott Needham.

A Memorial service will be held Monday Oct. 19, 2009, at 7 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel, 287 Arden Nollville Road, Inwood, W.Va., with the Rev. David Howell officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Newark Valley, N.Y.

The family will receive friends on Monday, from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service at the South Berkeley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Carolyn Barbe Memorial Fund, First United Bank, 1286 Edwin Miller Blvd, Martinsburg, WV 25404, c/o Vanessa Routzhan.
